Dedicated to the liberation of people and communities from poverty and injustice

Zambia

The Edmund Rice Mission began working in Zambia in 1964. Working mainly in education and community development, it has committed to providing life skills to the local community in order that they find sustainable livelihoods. Social conditions in Zambia remain tough. Poverty is extensive and the life expectancy is among the lowest in the world, hugely affected by the prevalence of HIV/AIDS.

Population: 13 million
Life Expectancy: 51 years
Infant Mortality Rate: 68 per 1000
Public expenditure on health: 5.9% of GDP
HIV/AIDS: 980,000 or 13.5% of population
Public Expenditure on Education: 1.4% of GDP
% of children primary school age not in school: 3%
Unemployment in youth ages 15- 24: 23.4%

The Journeying Together team in Luampa held a fun day for local children who were not attending school. Over 350 children came to the fun day - their presence indicating a large population of children without access to education. This was the first time the children held skipping ropes and played with real footballs.
