Edmund Rice Catholic Education Centre

Edmund Rice Catholic Education Centre provides education for the young men and women from the Embulbul area of Kenya.

It is an inclusive co-educational not for profit day school, owned by the Diocese of Ngong and administered by the Christian Brothers. It provides education for the young men and women from the Embulbul area.

In 2000 Fr. Kevin McGarry established the first primary school for street children in Embulbul. Within two days the registration of students had the school up to maximum capacity. The nursery school was started at the same time as the school. Its main purpose was to prepare poor and underprivileged children to enter primary education. It was clear that when poor children started school they were at a disadvantage to those who could afford to go to private nursery schools.

In 2004 a Secondary School was opened in tin sheds on the site, and in 2008 it moved to its permanent home replete with library and a science lab. In 2010, just 3 years after the school registered its first candidates to sit the KCSE exams, Edmund Rice Catholic Education Centre had its first student receive an A grade. This student, and many of the top performers in the exam, are also active in their school community by providing tutoring to other students and volunteering in the library.

This year, a new 12-classroom block was completed on the Secondary School site to accommodate the Primary School. It was a historic move bringing the two schools back together once again, now both housed in modern and comfortable new buildings.

Fr McGarry had been taught by the Christian Brothers when he was a youth in Ireland; he was so appreciative of the education he received that he sought the Christian Brothers to administer the schools he had set up. There are striking parallels between the initiatives taken by Fr McGarry in Embulbul in 2000 with those of Edmund Rice in Waterford, Ireland in 1802.
