Nuevo Horizonte is a project started in the town of Chimbote, Peru. Many of the families live in extreme poverty – there is no running water, sanitation or electricity in town.
Edmund Rice Mission established a presence in Nuevo Horizonte over two years ago offering academic support, music and dance classes to the community. Public schools offer education at a very low level, and there is little tutoring support at home because parents work long hours and lack the educational background to help. Thus the need for academic assistance. The Nuevo Horizonte programme has provided a safe and inclusive environment where children can grow and thrive academically and culturally. The project provides academic tutoring to children, music lessons and dance classes, which are vital to the development of the student and to the positive growth of the neighbourhood´s life and culture. The mission of this project reflects the new direction of Edmund Rice Mission: maintaining a compassionate presence and living in solidarity with the marginalised.
