On Tuesday May 14, we were delighted to host an Open House at Edmund Rice House for Dublin-based Brothers. The event was an opportunity to thank Brothers for their support over the years, and to give an update on how we work with our partners in Edmund Rice Mission. Over 20 Brothers came to hear a presentation and share a chat with the ERD team over tea and coffee.

Fiona gave an overview of how ERD operates and how we work in partnership with the Edmund Rice development projects abroad. Securing funding for the projects and building capacity of project personnel remain two of ERD’s main strategic priorities. We then invited Br. Eddie McArdle and Br. Clement Sindazi to talk about their experience as missionaries.

Br. Eddie is an Irish Brother who has spent over 49 years working in South America. He is currently based in Cochabamba, Bolivia serving in the Centro Hermano Manolo. This center was established in 2009 and provides a safe space for the working children of La Cancha, the local marketplace. Br. Eddie gave a history of the centre and how it has evolved to serve the children and their families with academic reinforcement, life-skills development and psychosocial support. Br. Clement then gave an overview of the ministries in the Africa Province, and showcased three development projects: the Girls Empowerment project in Sierra Leone, the Western Cluster project in Zambia and the Justice Desk Africa in South Africa. These three projects highlighted the diversity of projects operating in the Africa Province as they cross education, livelihoods and advocacy.

‘It was a great meeting. It gave us a great heart lift. You are doing marvellous work! It was the best and most positive and encouraging meeting about the Christian Brothers and their work that I have attended for years. You are really engaged in the work of Edmund Rice. He would instantly recognise it and be proud of it.’ - Br. John Ledwidge

We are hoping to organise another gathering for Brothers later this year. If you are interested in attending, please let us know by contacting Abigail at office@edmundricedevelopment.org.
