Improved Learning Spaces at Changa Changa School, Zambia

Changa Changa School is a primary school serving the Changa Changa residential compound in the Mazabuka community of Zambia.

ERD donors and supporters have been supporting Changa Changa School since 2009, and have contributed to developing basic infrastructure, including classrooms, a computer laboratory, a staff room and toilets, as well as providing teaching and learning materials. The improved school learning environment has contributed to the pupils’ academic performance greatly improving. The school Grade 7 examinations’ results now stand at 97% pass rate and Changa Changa School has become one of the top 5 schools in Mazabuka district.

In November 2017, ERD donors supported the renovations of three pre-school classrooms and the toilet block at Changa Changa School. The renovated three classrooms received new ceiling boards, repaired window frames, replaced broken window panes and dilapidated doors, repaired electrical wiring of the rooms, rehabilitated floors and freshly painted walls.

“Before the class was renovated, it was often dark, dusty and cold, especially in rainy season. From the time the classroom was renovated, the classroom is conducive and favrouable for the learners because they no longer feel cold.” Ms. Sakala, Pre-School Teacher

In Lusaka and some areas of Mazabuka district, there was an outbreak of Cholera in 2017 caused by poor sanitary conditions. There was no outbreak of cholera at Changa Changa School because of good sanitary conditions created by the rehabilitation of the toilets and classrooms. The improved school environment as a result of renovating the three classrooms and toilet block has motivated both the learners and teachers to concentrate on learning and teaching respectively.
