We have a vacancy for a Programme Manager to lead a small, dynamic international development team committed to the liberation of people and communities from poverty and injustice. Reporting directly to the CEO, this is a senior development role, based in Dublin.


POSITION TITLE: Programme Manager

REPORTS TO: Chief Executive

TYPE OF ROLE: Full-time, 18 month contract

BASED: Dublin 1, Ireland

SALARY: Commensurate with experience

Position Summary:

The Programme Manager is a senior role within a small, dynamic, committed team. The successful candidate will lead the Edmund Rice Development (ERD) programme team and will manage key relationships with ERD’s project partners. They will also be responsible for managing and continuing to grow ERD’s existing funding base and supporting partner projects through project cycle management.


Edmund Rice Development (ERD) is a development agency established in 2008 in Ireland by the Congregation of Christian Brothers and governed today by an independent board of directors. ERD is dedicated to the liberation of people and communities from poverty and injustice. We collaborate to support the sustainability of our partner projects by sourcing funding, building donor engagement and working with our partners to improve development capacity. ERD is committed to transparency and accountability, and to an efficient, effective operation that impacts positively on the lives of people made poor.

Our work supports a network of international development projects and programmes in the areas of Education (formal and informal), Community Development and Advocacy across Africa (9 countries), India, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. In 2015-16 ERD provided funding and development support to 44 partner projects, benefiting over 56,000 people in 13 countries across Africa, India, Latin America and the Pacific Rim.

The Role:

Primary responsibilities:

  1. Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with project partners.
  2. Provide leadership and overall management of funding activities from agencies, trust and foundations.
  3. Develop strategy to expand ERD’s portfolio of institutional funders and implement resulting plans.
  4. Manage the development and submission of project grant proposals, working with the ERD team and our in-country partners including:
    1. Guiding partners through the project cycle management process in preparation for submission
    2. Ensuring compliance with funders’ guidelines and governance requirements
    3. Liaison with agencies, trusts and foundations
  5. Manage ERD’s Project Cycle Management monthly meetings and the team’s activities to ensure all reporting, monitoring and evaluation standards are met.
  6. Manage the organisation’s programme of Monitoring and Evaluation activities and visits.
  7. Coordinate the process to finalise and implement Partnership Agreements and Memorandums of Understanding with project partners in 2017.
  8. Ensure ERD is compliant with relevant industry standards and best practice, and oversee ERD and our partner’s ongoing compliance with all agreed policies and agreements.

From time to time, the Programme Manager may also be required to complete other duties and projects as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • A result-focused, senior international development manager with a minimum of 5 years proven experience of grant-writing, fundraising from agencies and institutions, or project management within an NGO, faith-based organisation or funding body.
  • A degree or post-graduate qualification in international development and/or direct experience working in an international development environment.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of current sectoral governance requirements and best practice standards in international development.
  • Expertise or knowledge of current international development or human rights and advocacy issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills and financial knowledge.
  • Self-motivation, with an ability to take initiative and be creative.
  • Ability to work both on an individual basis, and with a team of people in the field and at head office.
  • Fluent English.
  • Excellent I.T. skills – specifically in MS Office.

Other Desirable Skills and Experience

  • A demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex and dynamic cross-cultural setting.
  • Use of relationship databases or software e.g Salesforce, Raisers Edge etc

This is a full-time, initial 18 month contract reporting directly to the chief executive. The successful candidate will be based at ERD offices at Edmund Rice House, North Richmond Street, Dublin 1, Ireland, and the role will also involve some international travel. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Employee car parking is provided at the place of work in Dublin 1.
